LDL. Beau Knows: A Newborn’s Fight for Life That Refuses to End in Goodbye
When Beau Hubbard was just three days old, doctors told his parents they might need to prepare to let him go.
Today, Beau is preparing to turn four weeks old this Thursday — and his story is already one of extraordinary courage, faith, and love.
Born in Killeen, Texas, Beau entered the world with a very rare and serious congenital heart defect. From the very beginning, his parents, Dillon and Meghan Hubbard, were told his journey would be difficult. But they never accepted goodbye as an option.
Before Beau was born, doctors knew his heart had not formed correctly and that open-heart surgery would be required shortly after birth. To ensure immediate care, Meghan and Dillon moved closer to the hospital before delivery.
When Beau arrived, things quickly became critical.
“He wasn’t breathing and had to be resuscitated immediately,” Meghan shared. Doctors soon realized Beau’s heart anatomy was far more complex than originally thought — so rare that it had never been seen before at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Beau’s heart sends too much blood to his lungs, putting him at constant risk of lung damage. Complicating matters further, he did not receive enough oxygen before and during birth, which caused swelling in his brain. He was placed under cooling therapy for 72 hours — a terrifying wait for his parents. Miraculously, Beau suffered no brain damage.
Due to the severity of his condition, Beau was life-flighted by helicopter from Austin to Houston, where specialists could begin intensive care and planning.
Doctors have since confirmed that Beau will need three major heart surgeries to survive:
- The first surgery, already completed, was to control blood flow to his lungs and prevent permanent damage.
- The second surgery will focus on correcting smaller blood vessels as Beau grows.
- The final surgery will be a full repair of his heart defect.
For now, Houston has become home.
“We’ve been told we’ll be here for at least six months — possibly longer — while Beau grows and prepares for the surgeries ahead,” Meghan explained.
Despite being just weeks old, Beau has already endured more than most people face in a lifetime. Yet his story is not defined by fear — it’s defined by resilience, faith, and a family that refused to let go.
Meghan says she knows something deep in her heart.
Beau plans on being here for thousands of months to come.
And that’s something she knows.
It’s something Beau knows, too.
