SAT . From Abandoned to Advocate: Rescue Dog Icee Brings Healing to a Fulton County Courtroom

She was shot. Abused. Left for dead.

Today, Icee walks into a Fulton County courtroom not as a victim — but as a source of calm in one of the most stressful spaces in the justice system.

The once-broken rescue dog is now a certified courtroom support companion, helping defendants steady their nerves and focus during proceedings. Where anxiety once ruled, Icee brings quiet reassurance — a gentle presence that can slow a racing heart.

Icee’s journey began with Canine Cellmates, a Georgia-based program that pairs rescue dogs with individuals in the justice system. Participants train dogs who desperately need a second chance. In return, they learn patience, compassion, and responsibility.

It was at a program graduation that Emily Richardson first met Icee — and knew she belonged in her courtroom.

“If they can come in more relaxed, more engaged, better able to communicate with me, they’re going to be more successful in the program in the long run,” Judge Richardson said.

Program founder Susan Jacobs‑Meadows believes the transformation goes both ways.

“They see the good inside us and they love us for it, even when we can’t love ourselves.”

Now, Icee lies quietly at the feet of people trying to rebuild their lives — living proof that healing is possible.

Second chances, it turns out, aren’t just for people.

Sometimes, they walk in on four paws. ❤️‍🩹
