SAT. A Smile Before Surgery Seven: Hunter’s Long Road Is Slow — but It’s Working

This was Hunter early this morning — cap on, arm wrapped, a quiet smile breaking through — just moments before surgery number seven.

It’s a smile that carries a lot of history.

He survived a near-fatal electrocution during an ice storm while trying to help others. He endured an arterial bleed. A wound vac. Endless dressing changes. Pain no one should ever have to measure in procedures and operating rooms. And still, he keeps showing up.

This morning brought a much-needed moment of hope.

After meeting with the orthopedic surgeon, Hunter’s dad shared encouraging news. The surgeon placed side-by-side photos from last week and today on the screen — and the difference was undeniable. There is significant improvement. The wounds on Hunter’s left arm are showing major change and healing well.

To support healing in his left thumb, surgeons placed a stabilization pin to help the Restrata matrix do its work. Another piece was added over the thumb, and the wound vac will likely remain in place for about two more weeks.

It’s not fast.
It’s not easy.
But it is healing.

Down the road — much farther down — Hunter will need reconstructive thumb tendon surgery. And surgery number eight is already scheduled for next Monday. The journey isn’t over.

But today mattered.

This morning meant progress.

Hunter’s dad is asking for continued prayers as his son comes out of recovery — prayers that the pin promotes healthy tissue growth, that healing continues, and that the pain eases.

And maybe most of all, prayers for strength — the kind that lets a young man smile before facing yet another surgery.

Isn’t it good to see that smile?

If you could say something to Hunter right now, what would it be?

Keep lifting him up.
