SAT . A Brother Lost, a Hero Remembered: Florida Highway Patrol Mourns Trooper Michael Diego

EOW 2/18/2026
RIP Trooper Michael Diego
The Florida Highway Patrol is mourning a heartbreaking loss tonight.
Trooper Michael Diego — a young officer, a dedicated public servant, a beloved son, brother, and fiancé — has died in the line of duty after suffering a medical emergency during a competitive selection process for the Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit at the FHP Training Academy.
Troopers on scene immediately began lifesaving efforts. Gadsden County EMS rushed to help. He was transported to HCA Florida Gadsden Emergency and later airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Despite extraordinary efforts by fellow Troopers, first responders, and medical staff, Trooper Diego passed away with his loved ones by his side.
He was one of their own — and they fought for him until the very end.
Trooper Diego began his career with the Florida Highway Patrol in 2021 as a member of the 149th Recruit Class. He proudly served the people of Florida for more than four years, first with Troop L in the Fort Pierce District, and most recently with Troop F in the Fort Myers District.
He wore the uniform with honor.
He answered the call to serve.
And he pushed himself forward — not for recognition, but to become better at protecting others.
Tonight, the thin gray line is a little quieter.
Trooper Michael Diego is the 55th Florida State Trooper to die in the line of duty. He leaves behind a grieving mother, sister, and fiancé — and an entire law enforcement family forever changed by his loss.
As flags lower and patrol cars fall silent, one truth remains: Trooper Diego’s service, sacrifice, and courage will never be forgotten.
Please keep his loved ones — and the entire Florida Highway Patrol family — in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable grief.
End of Watch: February 18, 2026
