A devastating tragedy has left a three-year-old Texas boy fighting for his life after a wrong-way crash claimed the lives of his mother, father, and older sister in the early hours of Christmas morning.
Diego “Dieguito” Peña Jr. was riding with his family shortly after 2 a.m. on Highway 99 in Fort Bend County when a vehicle allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into their car, according to authorities.
Inside the vehicle were Dieguito’s parents, Lizbeth Rodriguez Contreras, 27, and Diego Peña Jr., 26, along with his five-year-old sister, Camila. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Dieguito was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under close medical care.
The young boy had spent Christmas Eve at a holiday party with his family and should have been heading home, sleepy and safe in his car seat. Instead, he awoke in a hospital bed on Christmas morning without the people who loved him most.
Lizbeth Rodriguez Contreras was a beloved fourth-grade teacher in Houston, remembered by colleagues and parents as a dedicated educator who poured her heart into her students. Police have charged the driver of the other vehicle with multiple counts related to intoxication manslaughter. Investigators say alcohol impairment is believed to have been a major factor in the crash.
