LDL. A MOTHER’S PLEA AS CHANCE FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE: “HE IS MY WHOLE WORLD”
A mother’s breaking point has become a desperate fight for her son’s life.
Chance is now in critical condition, struggling to breathe as doctors push his oxygen support to its absolute limit—100 percent. He is just two settings away from intubation, and his condition worsened again after another medical emergency.
Doctors say Chance is experiencing delirium, and additional medications are being administered to help calm his body. He is fighting so hard to breathe that he is exhausting every remaining resource his body has left.
Earlier this morning, the family received a call from Duke University Hospital, confirming they have a bed available and are prepared to accept Chance. But hope was quickly followed by heartbreak. Due to the holiday, insurance approval has stalled completely.
A medical flight team could transport Chance immediately—but the cost is $19,636.57, a sum his family simply does not have.
According to the hospital’s social worker, there are only three possible paths forward. The first is insurance approval, which they fear is unlikely due to the specific policy. The second is Duke accepting the transfer on the promise that insurance—or the family—will cover the nearly $19,000 cost. The third option leaves the family facing impossible financial pressure.
Behind the scenes, at least five different air transport teams are actively working to find a way to get Chance back to Duke. What once seemed like a clear medical decision has become a complicated and emotionally crushing battle.
“I had no idea it would be this hard,” his mother shared. “I’m realizing the weight of it all.”
She expressed deep gratitude to the many people advocating for Chance behind the scenes, including Mark and Melissa from The Angry Lobster food truck, along with Alana, Michelle, Kelly, Noelia, Courtney, Jackson, and countless others who are refusing to give up on her son.
“To insurance, he is a number,” she said. “To me, he is my whole world and the reason I breathe.”
As Chance’s condition remains fragile, doctors administered magnesium and continuous potassium alongside Lasix after discovering dangerously low levels that placed him at risk of cardiac arrest while his lungs filled with fluid.
Despite everything, the family continues to fight.
With many supporters asking how they can help, the family has shared donation options as they prepare for what may become an urgent fundraiser to bring Chance home to Duke for the care he desperately needs.
