The firings, confirmed by both DOJ officials and the judges’ own union, hit New York’s busiest immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza — the epicenter of Trump’s escalating immigration crackdown, where chaotic arrests and violent encounters with federal agents have become disturbingly routine. The eight judges included Amiena A. Khan, the assistant chief immigration judge who oversaw others — a top-tier official removed without explanation.
This isn’t an isolated purge. It’s the latest wave in a year-long assault on judicial independence: over 90 immigration judges across the country have already been fired, with many replaced by handpicked loyalists. Judges say the message is unmistakable: rule the way Trump wants, or you’re gone.
Carmen Maria Rey Caldas, a Spanish immigrant and naturalized U.S. citizen who was fired in August after criticizing ICE years ago, described the atmosphere chillingly: “All of the judges are now sitting speculating about whether they’re next… It impacts their ability to remain impartial and do their jobs fairly.”
That is the point.
The firings dropped just 48 hours after nearly 200 New Yorkers protested a looming ICE raid — a public humiliation that reportedly enraged Trump and his hardline allies. And with the president now vowing on Truth Social to block all migration from “Third World Countries”, the administration appears determined to silence any judge who might resist his mass-deportation agenda.
Olivia Cassin, a decade-long immigration judge fired earlier this year, put it bluntly: “The court has been basically eviscerated.”
