SAT . A MOTHER’S FIGHT: WHEN TIME MATTERS MOST
A 3-year-old boy is fighting for his life.
And right now… his biggest battle isn’t just cancer.
Atlas has stage 4 refractory neuroblastoma — a devastating diagnosis with a survival rate of around 20%. In cases like this, every moment matters. Every delay can cost everything.
But this week, his mother’s fight has shifted from medical… to administrative.
After months of effort, Jacqueline finally got Atlas approved for his father’s insurance — only to have the hospital deny it. She searched for another option, even offering to pay out of pocket, but was told it must go through a third party due to state rules. Just a consult and lab work alone costs $7,000 — not including treatment.
Everywhere she turns, the answers change.
Insurance says one thing.
Hospitals say another.
Programs and case managers offer no clear path.
And she is facing all of this alone.
Jacqueline had to stop working to care for Atlas full-time — managing chemotherapy, hospital stays, and constant appointments. At home, her 6-year-old daughter tries to understand why her little brother is always gone.
Through it all, her question is heartbreakingly simple:
“I don’t understand how it gets to this point… where a 3-year-old fighting cancer can’t get the care he needs.”
This is where they stand —
not without hope…
but stuck trying to reach it.
If this were your child, what would you do?
And if you’ve ever had to fight a system while trying to save someone you love… what did you learn?
