SO. UPDATE: THE TOUGHEST PART OF THE BATTLE FOR WILL ROBERTS

Many of y’all have been asking about our friend Will Roberts of Ralph, AL.

The 14-year-old underwent surgery yesterday at MD Anderson in Houston, months after Will’s left leg was taken at the knee due to bone cancer.

Doctors operated yesterday after the cancer returned, this time to Will’s pelvic area and femur.

Dad Jason told me doctors cut a 15 inch incision from Will’s right hip to his left hip.

Will’s mom Brittney wrote a few heartfelt posts from Houston:

“This is the part as a cancer parent that rips you. The agonizing pain over and over and over and over.

“What was supposed to be small surgery, is now cut open from outside of one hip to the other and down the inside of his thigh. Tubes coming out from arms, hands, neck, nose.

“It’s heartbreaking to think how he will feel when all the anesthesia wears off and tomorrow comes. This is the part of childhood cancer that never gets easier. And we face our second surgery Thursday to attempt and freeze two more spots if they have remained stable.”

And last night Brittney wrote the following as the family returned to their Houston home quarters:

“To leave Will tonight was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Before I left, I put his big Jesus close beside him.

Me, Charlie (Will’s sister) Mama, and Auntie found the car and made it back to the house without any issues, but walking through that door broke me.

“His PlayStation remote sat exactly where he left it. His beef jerky still on the coffee table, right where I told him to pick it up last night. Water bottles scattered everywhere. It all just stopped me in my tracks.

“Last night he said, ‘I just wish I could stay here with y’all.’

He loved this place- back in April when me, him, Jason, and his Granny stayed here while he recovered, we laughed so much and made some of our best memories. Ever since, all he’s talked about is wanting to come back and have Granny and Charlie here too.

“Coming back tonight without him broke me. I saw the sadness on Charlie’s face too. We got to our room, and we just hugged and cried together.

“Cancer sucks. It really does.

But I know I’ll feel a little better when I see that strength rise up in him again.

“Today was just tough.”

Will Roberts will be back in surgery come Thursday as doctors will remove a few spots on Will’s leg.

Will no doubt has a lot of work ahead.

Will Roberts is a tough kid, and he has a wonderful family that believes in the power of prayer.

How about we include Will in our prayers?

They will be welcomed with open arms.
