sat . A New Heart, A New Beginning: 5-Year-Old Malia Croley’s Second Chance at Life

For nearly five months, a hospital room became home for 5-year-old Malia Croley of Lexington, Kentucky.
Diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy — a rare condition that left her heart too weak to function properly — Malia waited at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for the one thing that could save her life: a new heart.
On March 2, 2026, at 1:28 p.m., that miracle arrived.
The transplant surgery lasted approximately 14 hours. When it was over, her family shared the words they had been praying to say for months:
“She is DONE!! 🙌❤️ Thank You, God!!”
They expressed deep gratitude to the medical team who worked tirelessly — and to the donor family who made the ultimate, selfless gift.
Malia’s journey has united a community. In June 2025, her family created a Facebook page, Malia’s Heart Journey, to share updates and remind their little girl she was never fighting alone. A GoFundMe campaign raised more than $6,600 to help with mounting expenses. Back home in Lexington, teachers and classmates made cards and sent messages of love straight to her hospital room.
Through every setback, Malia’s mother, Jerrica Croley, asked for prayers — not only for her daughter, but for the doctors and nurses caring for her.
Now, because of faith, medicine, generosity, and a community that refused to let go, Malia has something priceless:
More time.
More laughter.
More hugs.
More chances to simply be a child again.
