DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina law enforcement community is mourning the loss of Master Trooper Steven J. Perry, who was killed early this morning in an on-duty traffic collision while serving the people of Durham County.
According to initial reports, Trooper Perry was traveling on NC-147 when his patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver. The crash proved fatal for both Trooper Perry and the other driver involved.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
Trooper Perry was a graduate of the 148th Basic Patrol School and dedicated nearly seven years of service to Durham County. Colleagues describe him as a committed public servant who wore the badge with pride and integrity, standing watch over his community with quiet professionalism.
His death has sent shockwaves through the Patrol family and the broader community he worked to protect.
“During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the fellow troopers who had the privilege of serving alongside him,” officials said in a statement. “We ask that you keep his entire family — and our Patrol family — in your prayers.”
Officials also expressed gratitude to the emergency crews who responded to the tragic scene, including Durham County Emergency Medical Services, the Durham Fire Department, the Durham Police Department, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s IMAP Division for their extensive assistance.
Plans for a celebration of life service will be announced as details become available.
As the community grieves, one message echoes clearly: Stay safe. Take care of one another. And remember a trooper who gave his life in the line of duty.
