We come to you today with a heartfelt plea for prayer and support from one of our ALF families—Danika, a brave warrior fighting against ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Her journey has been one of strength, resilience, and hope, but she and her family are facing another challenge that requires the love and prayers of their community.

This update comes directly from Danika’s mom, who has shared their experience with us: “Over the past few days, Danika began experiencing eye twitching and severe headaches. As any mother would, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything serious, so we scheduled an ophthalmology appointment just to be safe. Unfortunately, that visit revealed something that has left us shaken—Danika has lost vision in her right eye. This is often a sign of relapse, and that’s a fear we’ve been dreading.”

From that moment on, the world seemed to shift beneath their feet. The urgency of the situation became clear, and everything moved incredibly quickly. Danika was immediately referred to a retina specialist, and her oncology team was contacted. The very next day, she underwent brain and orbit MRIs, as well as a spinal tap, to get to the bottom of what was happening.

As if the emotional weight of the situation wasn’t enough, the medical procedures presented more challenges. During the procedures, Danika began having trouble breathing, which caused delays and complications. The concern grew as the struggle continued even after sedation, with Danika still having difficulty breathing on her own. This led to her being admitted to the hospital for close monitoring, adding another layer of anxiety for her family.

As we all know, the waiting is often the hardest part. But amidst the uncertainty, there is a light of hope. Danika’s MRI results have come back clear, which is an answer to many prayers. There is a sinus obstruction that could explain her breathing issues, which provides some clarity. Additionally, an ultrasound of her eye revealed a possible hemorrhage, but the doctors are still awaiting further answers. While it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, the family is holding onto their faith, waiting for the full picture to come into focus.

The family is incredibly grateful for the care and compassion surrounding them, even in the most trying moments. “Even though we are overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, we are surrounded by so much love. Returning to the hospital has meant reconnecting with doctors and nurses who have become like family to us. The long hugs, the familiar faces, and the constant compassion from those around us have been overwhelming in the best way. We truly feel that Danika is in the best hands possible.”

After being discharged from JSMC today, Danika and her family are now back home, where they will continue to await further clarity and answers in the coming days. Their next step will be traveling to a specialized hospital in Philadelphia for additional evaluation. Danika’s parents remain hopeful, focusing their prayers on one main wish: that this is not a relapse and that Danika’s right eye can be healed and restored to its full vision.
