LUBBOCK, TX — A Texas family is grieving the loss of their teenage son after a fireworks accident turned deadly during New Year’s celebrations.
Eighteen-year-old Kobe Lee Peña was celebrating with family and friends when a firework he was holding unexpectedly exploded near his head. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
“I held him tight in my arms, praying he would wake up and that this was all just a nightmare,” said Kobe’s sister.
Kobe leaves behind his parents, Venessa and Elias Alonzo, his sisters Kynzely and Ka’Sandra, and his stepbrother Elias Jr. Friends and family are calling for support, offering condolences, and remembering Kobe as a bright and loving presence in their lives.
Authorities remind the public to exercise extreme caution when handling fireworks and follow safety guidelines to prevent similar tragedies.
