LDL. A Mother’s Fight to Save Her Son: 5-Year-Old James Faces a Life-Threatening Crisis After His Father Is Deported
Five-year-old James is fighting for his life — and now his family is fighting to stay together.
James lives in Texas with a rare and progressive genetic disorder that affects nearly every part of his body, including his heart, lungs, blood vessels, immune system, and development. Doctors in Houston say his condition requires highly specialized, continuous medical care — care that cannot be safely provided outside the United States.
Without it, they warn, his life expectancy could be drastically shortened.
For James’ mother, Gabriela, the situation was already overwhelming. As a full-time caregiver to a medically fragile child, she spends her days coordinating appointments, treatments, medications, and emergency care — all while raising three other children.
Then, three months ago, everything changed.
James’ father, Jorge, was detained by immigration authorities and later deported to Honduras. Overnight, Gabriela became a single parent, emotionally and financially responsible for keeping James alive.
Doctors have since made it clear: James cannot safely receive the care he needs outside the U.S. Interruptions in his treatment could be life-threatening. Hospital staff have also told Gabriela that her family’s stability — including James’ father being present and able to work — is not a convenience. It is medically necessary.
James’ condition requires constant monitoring, access to pediatric specialists, and rapid response when complications arise. His disorder is rare and complex, leaving few hospitals in the world equipped to treat him.
Gabriela says her faith is now being tested more than ever.
She is caring for a critically ill child while trying to support three siblings — all without the partner she depended on. The emotional toll is enormous, but so is the fear that James’ fragile progress could be lost if his care is disrupted.
Right now, the family is pleading for help, guidance, and prayers.
They are asking the public to share James’ story in hopes that someone, somewhere, may know how to help keep their family together — and keep James alive.
For Gabriela, every day is a race against time.
And for little James, the stakes could not be higher.
