SAT . THE 5-YEAR-OLD HERO OF ALABASTER: A TINY WARRIOR WITH A GIANT HEART
ALABASTER, AL – It’s a quiet Saturday morning in Alabaster, and 5-year-old Ramsey Kate Cantrell is walking a little taller today. While most children her age are busy with cartoons and toys, Ramsey Kate is being celebrated as a hometown celebrity.
The reason? She isn’t just a kindergartner—she is a hero.

🚨 An Emergency in a Flash
Eleven days ago, a normal day at the Cantrell home turned into a life-or-death crisis. Anna Marie Cantrell, a devoted wife and mother, was walking to the second floor where Ramsey Kate and her 4-year-old brother were playing.
As she reached the top of the steps, the world began to spin. “It was likely my blood sugar,” Anna Marie recalled. In a split second, she lost consciousness and fell backward, tumbling all the way down the stairs.
📱 “Mommy is Hurt”: The Quick Thinking of a Child

While her mother lay unconscious and seriously injured at the bottom of the steps, Ramsey Kate didn’t panic. She sprang into action, grabbing her mother’s cell phone.
Thanks to a life-saving lesson her mother had taught her previously, Ramsey Kate knew exactly what to do: She triggered the emergency SOS. When the 911 operator answered, the tiny voice on the other end was clear and brave: “My mommy is hurt and she passed out.”
🔓 Courage Under Pressure
The Alabaster Police were the first to arrive, but they hit a wall—literally. The front door was secured with child locks.
Even then, Ramsey Kate didn’t give up. She tried to relay the garage door code to dispatch, and when the numbers became too confusing, she used her intuition. She signaled the first responders to the basement level, where she was able to let them inside.
❤️ A Miracle and a Message
The fall left Anna Marie with substantial injuries: a concussion, a broken ankle, a broken nose, and broken ribs. But today, she is recovering at home, overwhelmed with gratitude for her daughter’s composure.
“I’m sore, but I’m OK,” Anna Marie said. “And I’m OK thanks to my neighborhood hero.”
Today, we salute Ramsey Kate Cantrell. She is a reminder that you are never too small to make a difference, and you are never too young to save a life.
