2S.Kaylee, it’s a sad Christmas because the radiation therapy isn’t working.

The world inside the hospital is often measured in monitors and silence, but for Kaylee’s family, that world shifted fundamentally last Saturday. In the blink of an eye, the physical connection to her lower body vanished; Kaylee lost all feeling below her chest. The vibrant, spunky girl was suddenly trapped in a stillness no child should ever have to endure.

Desperation led to a CT scan of her spine, searching for a way to shrink the neuroblastoma that was stealing her mobility. The plan was clear: targeted radiation to reclaim what was lost. They prayed for a flicker of feeling in her toes, a sign that the treatment was winning. But by mid-week, the heartbreak arrived. The radiation wasn’t effective. The doctors decided not to continue with a second week. For Kaylee’s parents, it was a blow heavier than the illness itself.

Yet, in the midst of this devastating news, a different kind of light entered the room. Yesterday, despite the exhaustion, Kaylee and her brother received a visit from Santa Claus.

Kaylee was pale and weak, her body heavy with the weight of the disease. But as Santa sat by her bed, he leaned in close, his voice a gentle rumble.

“Kaylee,” Santa whispered, taking her small hand in his white glove. “I’ve heard you are the bravest girl in all of Texas.”

Kaylee managed a small, trembling smile. “Santa,” she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t need many toys this year. I just want to be able to run and play with my brother again.”

Santa’s eyes filled with a soft, tearful kindness. He squeezed her hand gently. “I know, sweetheart. I know. Your heart is so strong that it shines brighter than any star on my tree. You keep shining that light, okay?”

Kaylee nodded slowly, her eyes bright with effort. “I’ll try. I’ll be positive.”

Watching from the corner, her mother felt a lump in her throat. Kaylee wasn’t just smiling for Santa; she was smiling to keep her family’s hearts from breaking. “I wish I could be as strong as she is,” her mother whispered.

They are heartbroken, yes, but they are not defeated. While the medical options may be narrowing, Kaylee’s strength of heart remains vast. They are getting through this together, one smile and one moment at a time. Because even when the medicine fails, the love remains—and Kaylee’s defiant joy is the greatest miracle they have.
