3S. Steelers urged to trade T.J. Watt, move up for QB in 2026 NFL Draft
If you asked long-time critic of the Steelers, Colin Cowherd, what Pittsburgh should do to get back on track, he’d tell you it involved trading away T.J. Watt — but what else is new?
On Tuesday’s episode of The Herd, the outspoken sports personality argued the Steelers should trade Watt following their playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
“A couple of years ago, when I said I’d move T.J. Watt and get more picks, that was outrageous,” Cowherd said. “T.J.’s 0-for-5 in the playoffs. How outrageous is it?”
Additionally, he argued the Steelers should trade up in the 2026 NFL Draft to find their signal-caller of the future — Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson.
“…If you’re Pittsburgh with all these picks, my takeaway is you give out about six of them to get Ty Simpson in the first round,” Cowherd said. “Say what you want, it’s something. They have seven draft picks in the first four rounds. The Steelers have the ammo. Go get Ty Simpson. You don’t have to move up 25 spots. Move up 10.”Expert NFL picks: Exclusive betting insights only at USA TODAY.
Through 15 games in the 2025 CFB season, Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns and five interceptions, while also rushing for 93 yards and two more touchdowns.
It’s tough to take Cowherd’s takes seriously after he previously urged the Steelers to trade Pickens, Watt, and two first-round picks for Shedeur Sanders, but cleaning house defensively may be what’s in store after Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach.
