Kolten, 5 years old, was diagnosed with acute B-cell leukemia in November. Since his diagnosis, he developed a blood infection caused by Streptococcus veridian. He began having severe breathing difficulties and was immediately transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). While being intubated, he choked, and nasal discharge went directly into his lungs. Between that and the Streptococcus veridian infection attacking his heart and lungs, he required life support/ECMO. Within hours, Dr. Burton told us he was the sickest child in Alabama. For days, he kept saying it was a hopeful situation. He had to undergo dialysis and at times received up to 32 different medications/machines continuously for a very long time. On December 28th, the dialysis machine was removed for testing, and my son was doing very well. On December 31st, the ECMO machine was stopped for testing, and from January 1st, he no longer needed it. On January 6th, I noticed he was leaning to the right and had a lump in his right eye. I didn’t say anything for two days, and on the 8th, we found out our son had suffered a stroke… his body had endured so much from the high doses of chemotherapy, which put pressure on his brain. He could barely see or move… but he was so strong… Kolten still can’t walk, but he can talk and move both hands. Kolten has been doing very well for the past few weeks at home while on low-dose chemotherapy. We are in maintenance phase… He is in remission.
My reason for making this is due to us having so many set back our vehicle we own has some problems and not able to drive.. we got another with payments and the transmission is going out. Almost broke down twice yesterday while taking our son to his oncology appointment.. Now we have no way of going.. bubbas Medicaid will not cover his diapers and 2 medicine he needs daily. We also have 2 girls about to start school.. we have some school stuff already, just want them happy with what they get because they themselves have went through so much over the last 8 months..
